An Interview with Mary-Rose McLean

What do you do for Abacus Trust Group/Moores Rowland?

Having been with Moores Rowland, Monaco for almost 14 years, and being a Scottish trained lawyer by background, I head up the International Legal/Corporate/Yachting Advisory team at Moores Rowland in Monaco.

What do you love most about your role?

The variety - each day brings with it a new project or a challenge to overcome for our UHNW clients. As the vast majority of our clients in the Monaco office are Monaco residents, we have regular contact with clients and their families, and in pre Covid19 times at least, frequent face to face meetings. The interaction and diversity of client's requirements keeps me on my toes.

What has been your greatest achievement?

In recent times, I would have to say managing to complete on time and budget a complicated real estate acquisition and refinancing in London in the first few weeks of lockdown with all of the associated challenges lockdown brought felt like a huge achievement.

How has your business adapted in light of COVID-19?

Clearly, there were some logistical challenges at the outset of moving an entire office team with no real experience in remote working, to working out of their homes. With really helpful IT support in Monaco and from our group Head Office in the Isle of Man, the transition was almost seamless. Thanks not least to having a great, experienced team with a can-do attitude. Many clients have remarked that they did not notice a difference in the service they received while we were in lockdown and I believe that is testament to the professionalism of the team. We have been back in the office on a rota system and with appropriate social distancing measures in place since late June (in line with Monaco recommendations), but I think it likely that a mix of office/home working will become the norm, long after this COVID-19 crisis has passed. Personally, it is a welcome flexibility.

Why did you join PCD?

Prior to COVID-19, I found the networking sessions really valuable for meeting likeminded professionals in the private client field and during lockdown the webinars have been really good.

Have you attended a PCD webinar? What did you think?

Yes, I have and I found it very informative and engaging. The choice of good quality speakers who seem personable as well as being experts in their field really helped hold my interest for the duration.

On a weekend, I am most likely found...

Still exploring the amazing attractions (and restaurants) of Monaco and the Cote d'Azur. 14 years on, I am still enthralled with the area, from the mountains to the beach - it has a lot to offer.
